SLES 9, old hardware

I rebuilt a NetWare 6.5 server at home this weekend; replacing it with SLES 9.

What should have been an hour or so turned into a fun half-day – the CD-ROM on the server was flaky; SLES 9 CD1 booted; every other CD turned into just unreadable errors.

In the end I installed over ftp from another server – I should have done this much much earlier – I keep a server just for this purpose (AutoYaST, ZENworks Imaging etc).

In the end I was very pleased with another over-the-wire installation; it’s been a few months since I last had to do this; and this time for a ‘real’ server of my own.

ZLM 7 mirror – zlmmirror – how to

Here are some examples of ZLM 7 ZLMmirror configurations – fresh from cvs.

There are several key changes to mirroring from ZENworks 6.x Linux Management or Red Carpet Enterprise:

– a single configuration file for all mirror services
– configuration file is now an XML document rather than a conf file

Examples will be given for mirroring from RCE/ZLM 6.x (such as update.novell.com), YaST Online Update, Red Hat Network and finally ZLM 7 upstream services.

Drivel

I found another nice new tool for blogging – especially when I am off-line.

Drivel is a really cool client for working with your blog – it supports the online hosted stuff like blogger as well as self-hosted sites like MovableType or WordPress.

I installed Drivel from the Fedora Core 3 RPM (runs just perfectly on NLD) – just make sure you have an updated libcurl on your system. You may need to do some jigging around with symlinks in /usr/lib if you find badly behaved/packaged applications.

Novell Linux Desktop – Gnome panels

I had an interesting situation today where my NetApplet icon just disappeared. I hunted around the gconf panel settings – but no luck.

One quick mail to Guy and the answer came back:

Netapplet is a ‘systray’ application. I suppose you are missing the “Notification Area” applet in your of your panels for Netapplet to show up on your desktop.

If you have not already, simply add a new panel at the top of your desktop. Right-click on the panel “Add to panel > Utility > Notification Area”. Once there, you may need to restart netapplet to get it to show up there.

Working just great now – and shared so others may have a googleable fix.
