La Sagrada Familia

I managed to get some time out from BrainShare last week. I spent a few hours with John Mahon from Dublin at the Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Familia. More simply the cathedral of La Sagrada Familia.

For anyone who has ever been to Barcelona – or even heard of Barcelona – it is one of the most striking sights in the city. Totally dominating the skyline from every part of the city. Add to this the story of how this massive cathedral has been under construction for over a century; with still decades to completion.

Victorinox bag

I posted a week or so ago on a new bag that I bought for travelling.

Well – a trip to BrainShare Barcelona was too much for it. The pull handle fell to pieces (sharp plastic, metal, springs all over the place) and the ballistic nylon in the day sack got punctured.

Happily everything was covered under warranty; also I got the back from REI who have the most awesome service. They took the old bag and instantly exchanged it for new.

I’ll post photos of the damage soon.

Heading back home

Well – BrainShare Barcelona is over for another year. I’m just now collating the feedback from this week. Overall a very very positive event.

I’m getting on a plane this morning to head back to Utah – Barcelona -> London Heathrow -> Chicago -> Salt Lake City.

It’s an early start (urg – up at 5am!) – but at least I’ll be back in Utah early evening.

I’ll post the final photos and keynote reports sometime early next week.

Barcelona #3

There is a distinct lack of an iron in the hotel.

There are dozens of Novell people with speaker shirts looking for an iron; the BrainShare event team had to ‘borrow’ one so that the shirts did not look crumpled.

The other funny is the difficulty of finding chewing gum.

I spent an hour with Alan Murray walking around the shopping centre next to the hotel looking for anywhere that sold gum. We spent nearly an hour hunting shops and a super market; finally we found a small news stand – and we bought up about 10 Euro of gum and mints. We looked like lunatics.

Barcelona #2 – at the airport

Ah – it’s fun being back in Spain – the culture is unique.

One example was from yesterday at the airport.

The baggage carousel became jammed with a badly positioned bag, and caused a huge pile of spilled bags and cases. Imagine a pile of jumbled checked baggage about ten feet high and forty feet long. No one came to clear the blockage – so passengers had to fight for their own:

Barcelona

I arrived in Barcelona today after spending a productive day in London visiting customers.

BrainShare is being held in a different venue this year – the brand new CCIB out on the east side of the city. Here‘s a google satellite picture of the place under construction.

The weekend will be spent with training Novell people and preparing for the week. I will post pictures and more.
