COVID week 35 of lockdown – Nov 9 – Nov 15

Weekend – 2142 cases in WA yesterday; way about the March/July peaks. Positive test rate is heading to 5.7% and above. 184k new cases in the US on Friday. Europe-wide lockdowns are returning. Trump says “vaccine ready, except for New York”. Five more months of “severe” restrictions. WA heading back to tighter lockdown.

The Seattle Times has the weekly graph of State-wide data. It’s not looking good. 2000+ cases and more seem to be on the cards. This is heading into Thanksgiving.

Friday – Gov Inslee urges WA residents to not travel for Thanksgiving. This is likely to be the next super-spreader holiday weekend. This is a cool visualisation from GA Tech.  I worry it’s got “yellow, so it’s safe”.. 150k cases in the US yesterday. That’s a run rate of 1M per week.

Thursday – those UK curves. Ouch. Graphs from The Guardian. Cases peaked, hospitals filling, deaths following along behind.

image

Wednesday – 1 million cases in Texas, 1 million new US cases in the last nine days. On track for 1M+ cases per week – with the associated hospitalisation and deaths. Locally in Washington State the positive case numbers are up dramatically but hospitals and deaths are still lagging (i.e. flat). Graphs from The Seattle Times.

Tuesday – the deaths lag the hospital intake, which lags the positive cases. England & Wales death tolls jumps 41%

Monday – Biden transition announces COVID-19 Task Force. Positive news on vaccines. “Back to normal by Spring 2021”

COVID week 34 of lockdown – Nov 2 – Nov 8

Weekend – US setting the pace for a million new cases per week. Shocking, sad, not unexpected. Washington State – big spike in numbers. The White House continues to spread coronavirus. Melbourne relaxes the lockdown (which seems to have worked).

From The Seattle Times – the regular weekly status. That spike is going to be brutal. Hospital capacity is still good – but the spike in testing is the early indicator.

Friday – while most of the news continues to focus on election counts, the infections keep coming. US setting records for daily new cases. I would not be surprised to see some huge spikes in 5-14 days from long lines waiting to vote.

Thursday – the steadily increasing number of global cases, followed by the lagging hospitalisation, followed by the deaths. Europe, USA, Brazil.

Wednesday – post election. Record breaking local Washington State coronavirus cases. England lockdown starts tomorrow, panic buying and last minute socialising.

Tuesday – election day in the US. COVID related news intertwined with election news. Mask wearing while voting is now a partisan issue :\

Monday – Argentina importing 10M Russian vaccines.

COVID week 33 of lockdown – Oct 26 – Nov 1

Weekend – Numbers and reports from around the US and Europe continue to show a massive rise in positive tests, associated hospitalisation and the final lagging indicator, death.

Washington State numbers from The Seattle Times. Daily cases up, 800+ per day – that’s approaching the July peak. Hospitalisation and death are still relatively stable.

Friday – 91k US cases in the last 24 hours. 24k UK cases. This is the “new normal” as we head deeper into this phase of infection. “Save Christmas” lockdown.

Chart shows cases are continuing to rise steeply

Thursday – EU moving patients across borders to keep hospitals going.

Wednesday – France, Germany, Greece.

Tuesday – Talk of a new England-wide lockdown.

Monday – There is a risk this becomes a list of countries with record breaking infection. Portugal, Czechia, Belgium, Italy, UK, most of the US.

COVID – week 32 of work from home – Oct 19 – Oct 25

Slightly changing the title of the post to reflect this is week 32 of working from home; week 43 of 2020.

Weekend – Victoria, Australia flaring up again. UK urging “fresh air”, and this in the Seattle Times about Friluftsliv.

Weekly graph for Washington State, from the Seattle Times.

Friday – “3M cases in Spain” – 3x reported number. Multiple lockdowns across Europe. 80k + daily cases in the US.

That UK curve.

Thursday – Curfew and lockdown orders across Europe. US State numbers growing.

Wednesday – So many European countries in escalating cases. UK, Spain, France, Germany, Italy.

Tuesday – Manchester/NW England facing lockdown enforcement.

Monday – 40M global cases. “Tsunami” of cases in Belgium and across Europe. 48 US States with increasing cases.

Week 32 – Oct 12 – Oct 18

Weekend – misleading Tweets from Trump removed. US cases up in 48 States. Early voting continues despite distancing.

Weekly summary of Washington State cases:

Friday – local outbreak of COVID-19 at Harborview Hospital in Seattle. Continued reporting of massive European case surges. US Thanksgiving could be another superspreader weekend. 8M cases in the US. 220k deaths. 400k new global cases today.

Thursday – Remdesivir doesn’t prevent COVID deaths. UK lockdowns continuing amidst much confusion and pushback.

Wednesday – multiple WA counties improve – and start opening back up. 38M global cases. Watched Totally Under Control last night.

Tuesday – this looks a lot like March – with rapidly climbing positive cases across the globe. The only difference being rather than 30k cases per day it’s 300k cases per day. US daily cases is a classic fast, slow, fast pattern.

Monday – continued mixed behaviour from Senators – masks, positive tests, no masks, video attendance. French declare second wave is here. J&J vaccine trial paused.

Week 31 – Oct 5 – Oct 11

Weekend – “Trump immune to Covid” claim; Twitter removes tweet. Midwest cases climb. UK cases huge rise. UK at “tipping point”

Chart showing daily confirmed cases remain high

Weekly update from Washington State via The Seattle Times.

Friday – 350k new cases globally. New cases accelerating – similar to the spring.

Thursday – record global rise in new cases, clearly we are in the midst of a new wave. Serious hospital cases are the lagging indicator – and ICUs are filling rapidly across Europe and the US.

Wednesday – very much the two sides of the coronavirus story. Europe and US with increasing cases, lockdown and protests. White House coronavirus spreading and the (mis)information being spread about that. Scotland cancels 2021 exams. BBC summary.

Tuesday – the slow moving second wave continues to break over Europe. French ICU, Ireland Level 5, UK lockdowns.

Monday – more cases in the WH. Continued confusion over Trump’s health and care regime. Ireland heading for total lockdown. Cases rising across the US.
